So – I was recommended this book/series by multiple people. I’m a reader. I devour books. I have a bachelor’s and master’s in literature. I enjoy a variety of books/genres – from classics, to YA, to popular fiction. I don’t find too many books painful to read/listen to…but I’m am astonished how bad ACOTAR is and how bored I am by it.

I find the writing absolutely terrible and the story exceptionally predictable/linear. It feels like someone took beauty and the beast, sprinkled it with 50 shades of grey (what I know about it bc I’ve never read/seen it), and added faeries. I’ve scoffed and rolled my eyes more than I can count – it’s so cheesy and none of it is earned. It feels like the author just a makes stuff up as she goes to suit her narrative/plot progression.

I’m almost done with the first novel – not to give too much away, but Feyra is competing in those challenges. I keep waiting for it to get really good…so many people have said that I have to get to the end…one person said I had to get to book two.

Is it ACTUALLY going to get good? I feel like there has to be an insane plot twist for that to happen…

Help me make sense of it.

    1. there’s something major that happens at the end. then book 2 >!something else really major that contradicts the 1st thing happens.!<

if you’re not enjoying it though there’s no reason to complain about it on the internet. just put the book down and find something else to read that you do think you’ll like.

i loved all 3 of the main books in the series. i mostly read classics. this book is more like popcorn than a nice steak. don’t expect something it’s not. for what it is, it’s quite good.

Some people think that the complete change of everything that happens in book 2 makes the series good. I would disagree, but to each their own. The books are not well-written, and if you aren’t enjoying her writing style then I would recommend leaving off. It does not change, arguably it gets worse.

    3. There is a pretty insane twist, I wouldn’t call it a plot twist as such but it let’s just say the story isn’t as predictable as you think it is right now.

I’ve read all of the books except the last one and I’m quite a picky reader. I also have a degree in literature.

I found ACOTAR itself fairly average (if kind of required for the rest of the series) and I gave it 3 stars, to be generous. I may have given it 2.5 stars.

The second and third books are really fun and absorbing. Bear in mind they are romantasy, not fantasy with a sprinkle of romance. For what they are meant to be, I gave the middle books 5 stars – because they were so fun. I think when you can look at the first book in context, the series does say some interesting things, but I can’t really say anything without spoiling it. There’s nothing overly deep about the series though, it’s just a solid romantasy with some solid characters that is fun to read.

Are they great literature? Not at all. If that’s what you’re wanting, give up now.

    4. For the love of God, could people please take the few extra seconds to write the actual full title of the book you want to discuss so that 95% of the sub know what the heck you’re talking about.

I mean, anything that gets people excited about reading and talking about books is a plus, but I feel your pain.

I’m middle aged. When I was a teenager, Jean Auel’s Clan of the Cave Bear series was the set of books most people seemed to be reading.

I noticed but did not participate in the later Twilight craze.

I did read some of the Outlander series by Gabaldon, but I ended up dropping it because of all of the sexual violence.

To my mind this is no different. I read the first Court of Thorns and Roses, hated it. But people who are new to fantasy or new to romance might find it ground breaking. Older readers who are in to fantasy romance also like it. It’s just not for me.

    6. Yes, you are missing something: the taste that aligns with this book series. It’s annoying that people don’t like something and then automatically assumes that it’s trash and everyone else who loved it is wrong. No. You just don’t like it. And that’s perfectly fair. I wasn’t a huge fan of this series either. But can we just stop it with threads like these that are pretty much shaming others for liking something? One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. There is no right or wrong. There is just a difference in taste.

It’s especially annoying because these threads are constantly only aimed at romance books or other books more marketed for women.

There’s a world of books out there to enjoy. No reason in pushing something if you’re not enjoying it. I just wish people realized that there’s more out there than just their own opinion and taste.

    7. I loved the series, but I don’t kid myself that it’s amazingly written. I’m just a sucker for that type of book. If you really don’t like it I doubt you’ll like the second book. The second is much better than the first, but if you hate the first you probably still hate the second.
