Would love to find more books in this genre. Not so much horror classics, but modern works with a historical setting. I like stories set in the 19th century, though I won’t say no to other time periods – just preferably pre 1940s. Something that’s hair-raising, disturbing, beautifully written.
Here’s some that I’ve read to give a sense of what I like:
*The* *Terror* by Dan Simmons
*Between* *Two* *Fires* by Christopher Buehlman
*The* *Hacienda* by Isabel Cañas
*Vampires* *of* *El* *Norte* by Isabel Cañas
*Lone* *Woman* by Victor LaValle
*Mexican* *Gothic* by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
*Perfume* by Patrick Süskind
*Ring* *Shout* by P Djèlí Clark
*Slewfoot* by Brom

LOVED *Ring Shout*, such a banger. And Slewfoot is on my stack!
Idk if you’ve read any of hers, but Alma Katsu has *The Hunger*, which I loved— retelling of the Donner party migration through the middle of Appalachia with a supernatural bent. Great characters and a lot of good mystery. I also tried *The Deep* by her, which is a ghost story told on the titanic, unfolding over the course of the voyage as compared to being born of the wreck. I just happened to have read two books based around the titanic before that one, and had burned out on the subject hahaha
Turn of the screw?
