Hello,
I have agreed to volunteer at the local non profit for kids and I’m looking for some recommendations for things 8 year old kids might like – ideally regular books rather than graphic novels, things they can actually read. I guess I would describe what I am looking for as kind of comedy kids “novels” featuring kids getting into crazy situations.
Any recommendations of books or series of that kind would be great. I am told that most of the kids are into funny and silly, but slightly more serious fantasy or sci-fi aimed books.
Thanks a lot!
**Edit:**
Thank you everyone. Appreciate the recommendations. I will begin my homework tonight 🙂

*Sal and Gabi Break the Universe* by Carlos Hernandez
*A Dog-Friendly Town* and *Department of Lost Dogs* by Josephine Cameron (contemporary. children solving dog-related mysteries. I read DolD and it seemed pretty comedic to me.)
the obvious answers of “anything Beverly Cleary or Roald Dahl”
**fantasy/scifi recommended by my nieces:**
Skyborn series by Jessica Khoury
Dragon Girls by Maddy Mara
The Beetle Trilogy by MG Leonard
The Ickabog by JK Rowling
The Serafina series by Robert Beatty
The Unicorn Quest series by Kamilla Benko
The Dragon Keepers by Kate Klimo

**And books my nieces recommend that do not have child protagonists:**
The Dr. Doolittle series by Hugh Lofting
Hank the Cowdog series by John R. Erickson (if you’re unfamiliar with this series, I can vouch that they’re hilarious.)
The Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland
The Great Mouse Detective series by Eve Titus
when my kids were that age they were into Roald Dahl. James and the Giant Peach, BFG, etc.
I read two chapter books this past summer that I’m sure would be a huge hit with 8 year olds, subject-matter wise. [I, Cosmo](https://www.amazon.com/I-Cosmo-Carlie-Sorosiak/dp/178800387X/) is from a dog’s point of view, and [Leonard](https://www.amazon.com/Leonard-My-Life-as-Cat/dp/1536207705) is from a cat’s point of view. They’re really cute, funny, and sweet books.
The Great Brain books
Coraline
Ten and A kid
The Stories Julian Tells
The Sam and Anastasia Krupnik books
The Adventures of Goony-Bird Greene
Hank the Cowdog is fun at that age. Not about kids though.
