I plan to purchase 3 books to read during winter, and so far I’ve picked 2 out of the 12 books I have on my reading list. I can’t for the life of me settle on a third book, because every single one has a downside. Here’s the books with the things that make me want to buy them and the things that make me reluctant to buy them.
These two I already fully decided to purchase, but I’m open to changing my mind.
1.Piranesi by Susana Clark
Positives: I heard it has an eerie, creepy atmosphere that is on that hangs in the middle of dreaminess and horror.
Negatives: Kinda short for the price.
2.A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman
Positives: I heard it’s very emotional and sad.
Negatives: I almost finished Circe and, while I liked it, I’d like something with more plot.
Now for the ones I’m indecisive:
3.And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Positives: I heard it has a really good twist and I’m in the mood for a mystery book.
Negatives: same as Piranesi
4.Murder On Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Positives and negatives are the same as And Then There Were None
5.The Fisherman by John Langan
Positives: I love lovecraftian horror
Negatives: Again, a bit expensive (yes, I’m on a tight budget)
6.Bag of Bones by Stephen King
Positives: lovecraftian elements, writer protagonist, I heard It’s really scary
Negatives: The only Stephen King book I read was Salem’s Lot and I didn’t really like the writing style, but maybe this one will be different.
7.Sphere by Michael Crichton
Positives: Ocean horror, love to see it.
Negatives: I heard it’s more of a sci fi thriller than horror, and I’m not a fan of sci fi.
8.Bone White by Ronald Malfi
Positives: Alaskan small town horror, works really well with the winter atmosphere.
Negatives: I heard it’s one of the weaker of Malfi’s novels and It’s a pain to order it online, because I can find it only on a different site that takes weeks to deliver.
9.Congo by Michael Crichton
Positives: Jungle adventure with horror elements, I really like exotic settings and want some escapism.
Negatives: I feel like It’s more fitting for summer.
10.Dark Matter by Michelle Paver
Positives: Winter horror, heard really good things about it.
Negatives: I really can’t think of any other than the fear that the other book will be better.
11.Ruins by Scott Smith
Positives: I heard it has really good horror with a crushing atmosphere.
Negatives: same as Congo.
12: As Long As Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh
Positives: Emotional story, really cheap, talks about real issues
Negatives: Same as A Man Called Ove, I don’t feel like delving into socio-political stories about war during the holidays. That’s something for Spring.
Overall, my biggest contestants are Bag of bones, The Fisherman and Congo, but that’s just because I heard the most about them.
Which one do you recommend?
