He likes Star Trek and Star Wars. We recently read the Tripod series and he really enjoyed that.
I considered Ender’s Game, but he thinks it sounds a little intense for him (which I agree with).
I find a lot of contemporary stuff directed at this age group condescendingly light-weight, but a lot of YA stuff too heavy for him. Looking for something of substance that is still age-appropriate. I understand that is tough needle to thread.
I’m intrigued by the Skyward series by Brandon Sanderson, but can’t seem to find a straight answer on how age-appropriate it is in terms of violence. Other things are less of a concern since I’ll be reading it with him and we can talk through it.

Check out books by Kevin Emerson and John David Anderson (he’s written a ton of books, and a couple are SF.) Also Last Gate of the Emperor, The Lion of Mars. City of Ember. And maybe Gregor the Overlander–it might not quite fit, but I wonder if he’d like it.
