Hello, lovely people!
I really like to read and used to do it all the time. Now it’s just from time to time. When I fall out of the habit it can take anywhere from a month to a year or more to get back into it (it’s been a year and a few months this time). I like to start with books like ‘A Little Princess’ (A children’s novel from 1905) or the ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ novel to get myself back into things before I move on to other material. It’s just easier for my brain to absorb before diving into things like ‘Beloved’ or ’11/22/63,’ for instance. So what were some books that were really easy for you to absorb?

Anne of Green Gables is an old friend who is always happy to see you.
Definitely Anne of Green Gables as listed above. Jane Austen can also be good for this especially if you’ve read them before. Rereading in general works for me when i want something lighter. I also want to plug The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, feel good, funny and sweet, but not stupid.
Do you prefer historical books specifically? Or is contemporary fiction also good? Fantasy? Mysteries?
If it’s kid lit you’re looking for:
Anne of Green Gables series
Arabel and Mortimer series by Joan Aiken (funny as heck and v. British)
John Bellairs has some good spooky books, like A House With A Clock In Its Walls, and the sequel
P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster stories
Jean Kerr’s book Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, and Peg Brackens’ A Window Over the Sink
Bailey White’s collections of short essays: Mama Makes Up Her Mind, Sleeping at the Starlite Motel, Nothing With Strings (fiction)
For spookier stuff: Shirley Jackson’s short stories are great. Start With The Lottery and Other Stories, then try Just an Ordinary Day, then her novel We Have Always Lived In the Castle.
Then you may be ready for some Flannery O’Connor. Her short stories are fantastic. Some are longer than others, so you can pick and choose.
