Not YA if I can avoid it though, kids and zombies, ehhhh.
Doesn’t even need to be zombies. Just looking for end of the world stuff, through the lens of people who aren’t super buff gun loving action heroes.
Thanks for any help y’all can give!!

Have you read world war z already?
Swan Song is good. Though one of the characters is military and another is an amateur backyard wrestler, they aren’t ridiculous like an action film.
I also have to mention Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. It isn’t quite the end of the world, but it is pretty close.
Severance by Ling Ma might be what you’re looking for. It’s about an ordinary apocalypse. The Last by Hanna Jameson is an apocalyptic thriller about “normal” people and is also excellent.
Adrian’s Undead Diary by Chris Philbrook
The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison
the Newsflash series by Mira Grant, too
The Road
Where Futures End by Parker Peevyhouse
Earth Abides is a classic disease apocalypse – all about rebuilding and trying to preserve knowledge and civilization in the face of change. Pretty melancholic, but good.
Alas Babylon,
Well, I write the LitRPG series Apocalypse Parenting. MC is a mom of three with no combat background.
