We will go for a road trip this Thanksgiving, looking for family friendly mystery in audiobook format that’s a little more contemporary than say Agatha Christie.

What I mean by family friendly- no graphic sex or violence. Something a 10 year old can listen to and not get very shocked, and can even follow if they like. At the same time it shouldn’t be so kiddish that adults can’t enjoy it.

I am not opposed to YA flavour as long as the main protagonist ( the main detective or whatever ) at least isn’t YA.

    Basically not downright kids book.

A good engaging plot and good narration.

The drive would be very long ( Houston to Zion with breaks ) so either 1-2 long books or a few short ones

Open to cross genres ( sci fi mystery / historical mystery or adventure and mystery etc. )

There’s _The Daughter of Time_ by Josephine Tey. Not terribly long, but it’s “historical mystery.” And you can’t beat the reader: Sir Derek Jacobi. A detective is laid up in the hospital after a case, and to keep his mind occupied, he starts looking into the old story of Richard III and the Princes in the Tower.

If you’re open to an older story, there’s a version of _The Hound of the Baskervilles_ also read by Derek Jacobi.

There’s a free (? – at least it was when I go it) audiobook version of _Legion_ by Brandon Sanderson, about a man who has a weird kind of multiple personality disorder: he can create new personas who can become experts on a particular field. Unfortunately, I can’t remember off-hand how kid-friendly it is.
