Hello! I do my yearly challenge by theme and I’m ready to start making my list for next year. The theme for 2024 will be “Horror Double Feature” and will include at least 25 pairs of books. Each pair will consist of a classic horror novel or short story, and a retelling, sequel, parody, or otherwise derivative work of the previous.

***Example: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Prodigal Son by Dean Koontz***

The second book does NOT have to be horror (in fact, bonus points if it’s not!)

    Things I will not tolerate:
    1) sexual horror. Sex is fine, as long as it’s not part of the horror (ex: no >!bestiality!< >!monster rape!< >!pedophilia/incest!< etc)

    2) cannibalism. zombies/vampires/monsters eating humans is okay as long as it’s not graphic, but regular/insane humans eating people is just going to make me incapable of eating. It might be okay if it’s only mentioned, implied or glossed over quickly.

    3) excessive, realistic gore in graphic novels/illustrations

Feel free to get out of the box. I will absolutely accept short stories, novellas, poetry, children’s books, graphic novels, plays (in print format), movie novelizations/script books, webnovels, and even well written fan fiction. If you think it fits, suggest it!

    1. The Horror at Red Hook by HP Lovecraft and The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle, Both are quick reads 2ish hours. The Ballad of Black Tom attempts to combat some of Lovecrafts racist ideas by retelling the story from the perspective of a black protagonist.
