Especially looking for books like incorrigible children of Ashton place, at least in voice, but I also enjoy mystery or adventure element.

Can be kids books but I’m looking to start reading more books meant for adults.

Also open to books involving magic. Really really looking for clever or witty writing or dialogue and potentially puzzles along the way or problem solving.

Other books I liked- mysterious Benedict society, the westing game, howl’s moving castle, the girl who circumnavigated fairyland in a ship of her own making

I would give an example in a non children’s book but I don’t have any, I’m just beginning to branch out.

I’m also happy to receive recommendations for any and all reading levels, from picture books to door stoppers I love them all.

    1. I don’t know your references, but I ran right to this question because of “witty voice or dialogue.” Michael Poore is the epitome of this – both in narration and dialogue. I describe his books as having natural language – they sound like you talking to you friends, only funnier.

Up Jumps the Devil – the contemporary devil living here on earth. Lots of backstory and his love of an angel. And of course, deals made with the devil. This was my introduction to him and still my favorite.

Reincarnation Blues – the world’s most reincarnated man doing all he can to end that status. He develops a relationship with death and at a point in the book, they are struggling for their lives. It’s a little more philosophical than Up Jumps the Devil and not a straight narrative, but still full of Poore’s wit.

Two Girls, a Clock, and a Crooked House – I saw this listed on Goodreads and just grabbed it up on Libby without knowing anything about it. I quickly realized I was reading a children’s book, but it was absolutely brilliant and 100% Michael Poore (without the dirty language). Such a great story.
