I know, I know. “Forgotten Classics” is an oxymoron, but I’m more so referring to the great novels that have lost their flair or relevance over the years.
I’m starting a nonprofit centered around a similar theme and want to build a database of sort. Any suggestions are welcome!

Paul Clifford. Best opening line.
Can’t tell you what the rest is about.
Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope was quite well-regarded in its day.
Much more niche, but Old Jules by Mari Sandoz (a New Yorker who wrote about her native Nebraska) is both under-appreciated, less sentimental, and just plain better than that of Wila Cather, who covered similar themes.
The Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan. Tried to read it as a child. Super dry and bored me out of mind. Still have no idea what it was about and I don’t want to. But I did Google it to find out the author. It was written in the 1600s. No one in my circle had ever heard of it when I brought up as one of the most boring books to try and read. If that’s not a forgotten classic I don’t know what is really.
