It may not hit the exact vibe you’re looking for, but you may enjoy **The Power of the Dog, by Don Winslow** (not the Western by the same name! This one is about drug/gang wars). Gripping, suspenseful, and set mainly in the 80s (if that counts as ‘historical’ now haha).
