A friend was reading Verity on a trip. Other people on the trip gushed over how great it was. The friend let me borrow the book and I started reading it. It reads like teenage romantic fantasy. Don’t get me wrong, I have read plenty of books like Verity before, mostly pandering to boys’ teenage fantasies.
I stopped reading once I read the line:
” “Holy shit,” I say, laughing. When we get to the register, I can’t stop smiling. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that kind of epic burn in person.”
Something about using “epic burn” in a totally serious tone removed any desire to finish the story.
I am wondering if reddit has any suggestions for books like Verity, but better. I would love to return Verity back to my friend with some recommendations. I feel bad for trashing the book so much.

Hoover writes books for people who don’t read books.
Thank you for pointing out that. I bought this one bc of the hype, now I’ll never read it. DONATION pile. Gross.
maybe check out gone girl by gillian flynn?
That book made no logical sense at all. I remember hating it so much. It was like *Twilight* with more plot holes.
You are going to have to tell us what you liked about the book to get recommendations. The plot twists? The graphic (yet vaguely silly) sex? The Victorian sense of menace? The unreliable narrator?
I like Lisa Jewell, Alice Feeney, Sally Hepworth, Sarah Pinborough, Alex Michaelides , B. A. Paris, Nicola Sanders, Riley Sager, Alex North
