I’m looking for an autographed first edition Ishiguro, and I’m seeing a handful of listings for The Buried Giant (2015). These “first editions”, though, sometimes have stickers on them marking Ishiguro’s winning of the Nobel, which didn’t happen until 2017. How is this possible? Are these fake or am I missing something obvious?

Is it just a graphic in a listing? Or a sticker affixed later? Otherwise, I think you’re right that anything badged directly in the cover design couldn’t possibly be a first edition.
The books that were still in stock when the award was issued often have them added. I used to sell computer software, and remember sticking “Top Productivity Product of 1998” stickers on something like Microsoft Works. The product was already in stock. The stickers were meant to encourage people to buy it.
