For example: why do folks like steve jobs, elon musk, john carmack choose to dedicate large portions of their life to doing these insanely difficult and stressful things that ultimately make a lasting impact on the world. What motivates them?

It would be great if there were single books that collect multiple examples of this (unlike individual biographies of these folks)

    1. “Outliers: The Story of Success” by Malcolm Gladwell

It discusses why/how certain people become hugely successful and also how large failures occur. It’s an interesting read for sure. It discusses everything from socio-economics to cultural differences.
