I have always been prone to daydreaming and find works of fiction to be kind of a catalyst to long stretches of escapism. So if you could recommend me a fictional book which is difficult to “escape into” NOT because it is a dystopia/horror, but because it just isn’t too “fantastical”. I would also like something on lighter side, but that has a theme of hope and perseverance as I’m struggling with mental illness and could use the inspiration. Nothing that will give me an existential crisis. Oh and also I am single and would like a book in which the protagonist is working on bettering themselves in some way, so friendships and stuff are fine but no romance.
Bonus if the protagonist is kind of “lost” in their life and is in their early 20s.
So tl;dr, I’m looking for something that
– isn’t too fantastical
– nothing too deep
– themes of hope and perseverance
– doesn’t have romance
– bonus if the protagonist is in their early 20s/kind of lost in life
Also I realize parts of my post are a little vague let me know if you want me to elaborate more.
And if you have a recommendation which meets most of the criteria still please share! Thanks

The Catcher in the Rye is like that.
The main character is in his late teens, gets expelled from his school, is disillusioned with life and just goes wandering around NYC with no direction trying to find himself. There’s nothing fantastical about it. It’s also not overly long, at just over 200 pages. It also doesn’t have romance. It does mention someone the main character likes but never pursues.
The first thing that came to mind was James Herriot books, they are fictional but kind of inspired by his life but they fit some of your requirements
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
