Some examples I can think of on top of my head is Devil All The Time by Donald Ray Pollock or Lapvona by Otessa Mosfegh or Asylum ( in American Horror story ). I’m really just looking for creepy religious vibes as part of the setting or characters. Please nothing with excorism being the main plot point.

About a trans-masc teen/young adult raised in a Christian cult that brings about the end times via zombie plague (not your typical zombies though). He has been built up to be the messiah of this cult, but escapes, meets some survivors holed up in a queer youth center and with them, makes plans to bring the cult down. I didn’t love it, but I don’t like horror all that much. It definitely had some interesting ideas.
Children of the Corn by Stephen King is a short story but very creepy
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman
