So I have recently reread by The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy. On this reread I was struck by how the exposition was handled. For example the author explains how a nuclear reactor powers a submarine but in stead of being a pice of interesting bit of trivia Tom Clancy turns that exposition into a tense scene.
He dose this by introducing the safety system and then having fail. So we are than shown the inner working of nuclear reactor as it tears it self apart. Told in such a way that you could call it graphic in the sense something being gorey.
Where the tension comes from is in-between of explaining the melt down. We are shown scene of the engineer missing the warning sings. So we get to see the disaster.
So to open of the floor dose anyone else have examples of exposition being use for the sake of tension or favorite Tom Clancy use of exposition?
