I love mysteries and thrillers, but am open to hearing suggestions from any genre!
EDIT: I grew up in the 70s and 80s so I’m always curious about popular books from the time. Also, I love to find used books at library sales, yard sales, thrift shops, etc. You can find some hidden gems!

Pulp fiction for sure, but lots of copies sold: Sidney Sheldon and Harold Robbins. The Other Side of Midnight and The Betsy.
This is in danger of being considered “classic” but it’s a great read:
*The Name of the Rose* by Umberto Eco.
Or take a chance on some non-fiction that’s as gripping as any thriller:
*The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales* by Oliver Sacks.
Or gripping non-fiction that *should* have been a best seller:
*The Corpse Had a Familiar Face* by Edna Buchanan
If you like kitschy stuff, read Judith Krantz. Especially Scruples and Princess Daisy.
_Shogun_ by James Clavell. *Huge* hit as a book, got made into a legendary miniseries with Richard Chamberlain, John Rhys Davies, and Toshiro Mifune, and for a long while James Clavell became a household name.
Fear of Flying, by Erica Jong
Charm School by Nelson DeMille
If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon
Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews
Looking for Mr Goodbar by Judith Rossner
