Hello, I want to get better at reading because I struggle with it a lot and it’s getting to the point where it’s bottlenecking my academic progress because I can’t read my text books at anywhere near the same rate as my peers. It takes me like 2.5 hours to read 10 pages of a textbook while making notes and taking small breaks. Even though I’m in a stem field, sometimes I feel like I got the short end of the stick in the biological sex/gender lottery because so much of my program requires reading multiple ~60 page chapters of textbooks per week and I simply don’t have enough time with labs and classes and I just fall behind.

I think the problem was that I never found reading interesting as a boy unless it was dragon ball or captain underpants, so I never developed the a strong level of reading comprehension. The books I was able to start and actively enjoy reading were the from the song of ice and fire series, but with Martin probably never finishing it (and the terrible last seasons of game of thrones), all my interest died and I never finished a clash of kings. Since then nothing really interests me, and I’ve only read for school and a psychology book my therapist recommended for me (it’s short tho).

I find a lot of classic books bore me. I guess I’m not interested in past time periods really. I feel like I would be interested in Stephen king, but he seems like to weird of a guy for me to want to support financially. I’m probably more sci-fi interested than fantasy interested. I don’t really like books with really surface level political takes (I understand a lot of the iconic ones inspired those takes that just later became surface level), but I didn’t really enjoy the Handmaid’s Tale or any book where the message is just “war bad”. That being said I’m super vain and visually focused, so nice cover art might be enough for me honestly.

Anyway, I’m just gonna list some movies and series I liked because this post is already way too long. Thank you all for your time:)

Movies/Series I like: Interstellar, The Boys, Breaking bad, Blade Runner (and 2049), the cyberpunk anime, Whiplash, the Departed, Get Out, Boyhood, the Thing, Mindhunter, Akira, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Arrival, Narcos, The Death of Stalin, Dallas Buyers Club, Hannibal, and a lot more that I can’t think of right now.

If you like sci fi, Blake Crouch’s books are great! My teenage son and I both loved them!

My husband isn’t much of a book reader, but he’s read a lot of Douglas Coupland’s books- they are also good! Maybe something to look into? I’d recommend Hey Nostradamus and All Families Are Psychotic.

David Sedaris is a good comedy writer that’s easy reading if you want a different genre!

Also The Hunger Games, Michael Crichton books (Jurassic Park), and Grady Hendrix for thrillers!

      Happy reading!

Lot’s of people saying Ender’s game. I’m the same age as you and I didn’t care for it. I felt like it was more of book for teens.

I can recommend Mistborn series, Jack Reacher, Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, among others.

If you like dystopian fiction, with some conspiracies, and being able to watch growth with in people then you should read Fallen World. With it’s dark humour and in your face world makes it a very interesting read. It reminds me of things like Berserk, Chainsaw Man and Ghost in the Shell, to name a few. Gives off Halo/Warhammer vibes as well.
