A book where New York City feels like a character more than a setting.
Not necessarily about New York like Non-Fiction history. Some suggestions can be similar to Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. Contemporary books are preferred.
Not high literature, but I really felt like City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert was deeply rooted in NYC.
Laura and Emma by Kate Greathead

The City We Became by NK Jemisin is about cities reaching a certain size and becoming conscious entities.

If you like urban fantasy, try The Shambling Guide to New York City”, Mur Lafferty. It’s book 1 of a series that died after the 2nd book; I’d recommend ending after book 1.

Not a book but Fables by Neil Gaiman is a graphic novel set in NYC with fairy tale creatures as characters and the city definitely feels like a background character.
