Hello guys, I was wondering do you know any important dutch writer? Bcs I feel like all the scandinavians/northen countries are not the most prolific at it. I’m mostly into classics when I read something I want it to be deep and strong. Is there any dutch writer that fits this? There has to be but never heard about any. Since they are all so anglophiles it would make sense that their language isn’t developped as much as it should.

Try Harry Mulisch with *The Assault* and *The Discovery of Heaven* to start off with.

Arnon Grunberg is Dutch, hugely popular there and fairly broadly published in other languages. *Tirza* is probably the most accessible of his novels.

There’s Herman Brusselmans (Dutch/Flemish-speaking Belgian) although I’m not sure which/how many of his books have been translated. There’s something very unique in the way he writes.

I’ll also put forward Adriaan Van Dis. No idea why, but his stuff lacks something for me. It’s still pretty popular, so who am I to say? Unsure which of his books have been translated.

I’ve always thought of Annie M. G. Schmidt as being the NL equivalent of Astrid Lindgren (author of *Pippie Longstocking*). Best known for the *Jip en Janneke* books.

Rutger Bregman is fascinating for socio-historical/-economic commentary. Again, unsure what’s available in English.
