Penguin classics those days had nice yellow-ish, thick paper so that one’s eyes were more comfortable with compared to the recently renewed(cover outlines, for example) penguins classics that are very much lighter in thickness and colour. They just hurt my eyes a bit. I just simply miss the old version of penguin classics and what disappointment I had when I re-ordered Crime and Punishment only to be dumbfounded by the light grey coulour of the paper.

Would Penguin publishing company replace all of their books with the low quality paper like the ones I’ve aforementioned?

Every industry from publishing to packaging is struggling with paper shortages at the moment. The costs of paper have skyrocketed. Not saying this is necessarily what has happened with your copy of the book, but it may certainly have had an influence.
Do you have publication dates on the Penguins you’re talking about? When I read a lot of Penguin Classics about a decade ago, I wasn’t impressed by the paper quality, so I’m wondering how far back the issue goes.
Interesting. The older penguin classics with the iconic orange, blue, green covers had such poor paper that many of them literally fall apart in your hands now. How long was the improved period?
