Hi folks,
I come with both two general request and a much harder “stretch goal” request. First, the easy ones: looking for urban fantasy novels that are not YA and not paranormal romances — think Seanan McGuire, not True Blood. Ideally I’d love some queer representation as well but I’m not picky.
Also looking for mysteries that sort of hit the spot between “cozy mystery” and “airport thriller” — Louise Penny is my favourite in that space, if that helps. Tana French is my other fave, and that’s about as far into the pop-thriller space as I like to lean.
Now my big dream is for something that combines the two and which, crucially, is *not* the Dresden Files. I have read and loved the Dresden Files, but I am looking for more — and possibly (and again, stretch goal, I know the genre space I’m talking about) someone who writes about women like they are people. I love Jim Butcher but that is, uh, not his strong suit.

For the former, try the Watch series from Lukyanenko. Definitely not YA stuff 🙂
You may like Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone
Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch
Well, I came to recommend Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series based on the title, but it seems like you already have that covered, so…
Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series, beginning with *Spider’s Bite*
Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series, beginning with *Skinwalker*
I’ll also add Anne Bishop’s The Others, beginning with *Written in Red*, which stretches my personal definition of urban fantasy, but is close enough and is definitely a personal favorite (just did a full series re-read last month)
