This is a really specific ask, but I’m hoping someone here might be able to help me. I’m currently taking a class studying children’s literature, and each week has a different theme (e.g. banned books, science, memoir, war narratives, etc.). As part of the class, each person is assigned a read-aloud date over the course of the semester, and reads a picture book that fits in with that week’s theme; for example, on the science week, someone brought in a Magic School Bus picture book.

On the week that I’m assigned to read, the theme is “graphic novels/comic books.” I’m really struggling to come up with picture book ideas that work with this theme. I thought about just reading aloud an issue of a comic book, but it needs to be a traditional children’s picture book, and it should work thematically with that week’s discussion. So I figured I’d ask here.

Does anyone know of any picture books that would work alongside the theme of graphic novels/comic books?

    1. Maybe a superhero themed picture book?

Or does the picture book have to feature a graphic novel/comic book, or have a similar layout?

    2. Dav Pilkey’s books. Specifically Dog Man or Cat Kid. Geared towards ages 6-10.

      The Very Hungry Catipillar, perhaps.

    3. Hopefully you can visit public library. Keep in mind you can check out a stack – I like this option because you can check-out multiple options and look them over at home. They can request a book for you if they don’t have it on the shelf. Also ask the librarian in the children’s section for suggestions!

There were some children’s books illustrated by Friso Henstra and mostly written by Jay Thompson that were really wild; the art reminded me of the Beatles movie _Yellow Submarine_ as a kid. _The Practical Princess_ was my favorite, but _Stupid Marco_ and _The Round Sultan and the Straight Answer_ were also notable.
