What are your opinions on this book?
I’ve recently finished it. It took me a while to get into it… I found the first half boring, so I stopped reading and forgot about it for a month or so. Today I picked it back up and read the whole thing in the space of about an hour. So, it had me hooked for the ending, and yet the ending left me completely unsatisfied.
I appreciated a lot of things in the book: the lives and expectations of women in the 50s, the way her depression is described as real and raw. I felt her depression came out of nowhere though. Maybe because I read it so quickly. The first half of the book was so different to the rest. I wanted closure on so many of the characters but they were never mentioned again. Like Doreen.
And, as I said, the ending didn’t satisfy me. But maybe that’s because I’m in a headspace quite similar to Esther, and I want a clear path out of it, which a book can’t give me, I guess.
