Recently, I re-read Annie Proulx’s *Brokeback Mountain*, and I feel in the mood to ruin my day, so… any suggestions for stories that can be summed up with that sentence?

Would love if the novels were set in the American West, cowboy stories and the like, but I’m not picky. Short stories collections would be great too!

    1. Ah, you’re up for a bit of an emotional roller coaster, eh? Try *[All the Pretty Horses](https://wydgetlabs.com/?red=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fdp%2F0679744398%3F%26psc%3D1%26linkCode%3Dll1%26tag%3Damznwydget-20%26th%3D1%26language%3Den_US)* by Cormac McCarthy. It’s a profound cowboy novel set in the West, and man, does it pack an emotional punch. For a collection of short stories, *[The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven](https://wydgetlabs.com/?red=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fdp%2F0060976241%3F%26psc%3D1%26linkCode%3Dll1%26tag%3Damznwydget-20%26th%3D1%26language%3Den_US)* by Sherman Alexie could be up your alley. While not exclusively cowboy focused, it encapsulates the spirit of the West and the indigenous experience perfectly. Read them with a box of tissues handy!
