I want to hear your favorite penny dreadfuls. While doing my own internet snooping, I discovered the only one I’m familiar with is Sweeney Todd, and not even the original penny pieces. I know more about the influence of the penny dreadful style of publication than the stories themselves. What are you fav tales? Characters? If you know of any online databases I can read the serials, I would love a link! So far, I know more about which universities have (X) cubic feet of flimsies in storage, but I haven’t yet found many places to actually read scanned pages. Searched the Gutenberg database and got some results but the filters aren’t particularly useful and it is a slog to find them.

    Thanks so much!

One of the most ridiculous, insanely long penny dreadfuls was _Varney the Vampire_. I think it’s readily available from Gutenberg.
