I’m not much of a romance person but I’m kind of challenging myself to find a book I like, since this is such a huge genre. I want to understand the appeal! I think part of my problem is I’m not a fan of the typical tropes – ripped and domineering, alpha male (ugh), rich guy who likes to spend money, etc. please suggest something different, with a character who is kind and soft.

emily henry’s books are popular and great!! her men are super sweet and genuine. my favorite is people we meet on vacation but they’re all great! also the brown sisters series by talia hibbert!!

    2. I am not much for romance either. But I really enjoyed Damaged Gods The Monsters of St Marks by JA Huss.

It’s a bit like an adult version of Beauty and the Beast with steamy sex scenes.

    3. It sounds like you are looking for “cinnamon rolls” — the name for the anti-alpha male, supportive, considerate MMCs.

Other than tropes, what books/genres do you usually enjoy?

I found romance novels I liked—and many I did not like—by looking for books similar to what I already read.

I have a couple suggestions! Different options, some are actual romance novels and some are just ones I’ve liked that the couple are the central focus.

My favourite not-romance-romance book is the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

Contemporary/STEM: the Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood (actual romance book)

Modern take on romance: Normal People – Sally Rooney (I think this is fiction and literature but very focused on relationships)

Office Dating: the Hating Game – Sally Thorne (actual romance)

Mental health/romance: Alone with you in the Ether – Olivie Blake
