Look up some Emil Cioran. Post WW2 Romanian philosopher/social commentator. You’ll discover quickly enough that he wasn’t too bullish on helping readers feel good about life.

Well, these books make you feel good and bad at the same time. They’re hilarious but surprisingly nihilistic.

Anything by Camus or Nietzsche should scratch the itch. *The Stranger* (Camus) is about doing things for the sake of doing them, not because there’s any particular meaning to any aspect of life, and the *The Trial* (Nietzsche) is about how nothing you do matters because the universe is going to screw you over no matter what. I have to read/watch things with really strong emotions to jolt me out of my funk after finishing these books ’cause they make me feel so numb and jaded. Sorry I can’t think of any more modern books.

Story of the Eye by Georges Batille
Tender is the Flesh
The stranger by Albert Camus
Infinite JEst by David Foster wallace,
these will probably drag you into depression well enough
