I’m a devotee of the classics. If you’d care to share your interests I and others here may be able to steer you towards novels you’d appreciate.

Oh, actually, I’ll just step out and say hands down start with a Brontë.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Or
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
If you like dark and moody, the Brontë sisters are where it’s at.

The reason books are considered classics are because they’re of a quality which has been loved generation after generation. So, by very definition all of them (as not all old books are considered classics).
What might be worthwhile is suggesting a time period or interest and we could suggest a classic which fits.

So many of them, they are classics for a reason! My favorites would be:
* *East of Eden*
* *The Old Man and the Sea*
* *The Great Gatsby*
* *Frankenstein*
* *Crime and Punishment*
* *The Picture of Dorian Gray*
* *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest* (perhaps a stretch, given how modern it is)

>i was wondering which classic books are actually worth reading.
None with that attitude. You won’t get anything if you read a book for the sake of reading it.
If you mention what books you like, I can try to recommend similar classics, rather than giving you a catchall list of the same two dozen classics everyone loves to recommend.

For a powerful exploration of social injustice and the redemptive power of love and sacrifice, ‘Les Misérables’ by Victor Hugo is a must-read. Hugo’s vivid portrayal of 19th-century France and his deep empathy for his characters make this novel an unforgettable experience.
