I’ve been reading a lot of “Great American Novels” and a huge number of them are Westerns and many Westerns (even those that deal with things like anti-black racism in decent ways) speak about the Native Americans in horribly one dimensional and dehumanizing ways.
Obviously I realize that much of this is because the book is following the white cowboys and it’s telling the story in a way that they would or making some other, similar point.
But that doesn’t change the fact that I never see the Native perspective represented at all and especially not in a way that treats them like humans.
So I wondered if there’s any great fiction that covers this period from a native POV or any other great Native American fiction.
Thanks in advance!
